By a unanimous vote, the Charlestown Democratic Town Committee endorsed the re-election bids of US Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and US Representative James Langevin.
“Rhode Island is lucky to have one of the very best Congressional delegations of any state in the Union,” said Committee Chair Cathy Collette. “Sen. Whitehouse and Rep. Langevin have worked hard for the people of Rhode Island and for the good of our country. There was no question, hesitation or reservation among our members about enthusiastically supporting their re-election efforts.”
Representative Langevin spoke at the February meeting of the Charlestown Democrats and the Committee hosted a very successful event for Senator Whitehouse here in Charlestown last September.
At the end of June, the Charlestown Democratic Town Committee will introduce its slate of endorsed candidates for local and state offices.

Important Budget Meeting Monday, May 7th
Charlestown Voters Should have the right to vote on $475,000 payment for the YMCA Camp as a separate ballot item

Would you let someone pick your pocket without saying a word? Well that’s what’s in the works here in Charlestown right now.
The Public Hearing on the budget starting fiscal year starting July 1st will take place Monday, May 7th at 7:00pm at Town Hall.
In the budget is $475,000 for the broken down old YMCA Camp on Watchaug Pond to be used as “Open Space”. As you know if you’ve been following this issue, this seems to many in town to be a really bad deal for Charlestown taxpayers. The Budget Commission has recommended that in order to save bond interest the money be included in the town budget rather than the existing Open Space and Recreation bond.
The problem is that our town Charter requires any land expenditures over $50,000 be a separate item so that voters can vote it up or down without having to defeat the entire budget.
We are still not clear how this $475,000 will be handled, but if you agree that taxpayers should have a right to have a separate warrant item on this very dubious use of town funds we urge you to come out next Monday night!
